Writing CV Personal Profiles
Personal profiles are one of the most hardest things to write.
Nearly all CVs have a profile that says hard working
, able to work in a team
, versatile
, motivated
, etc. These are cliches, which recruiters expect to read, but is considered irrelevant.
A personal profile is normally the first thing a recruiter reads and it needs to capture their attention straight away, in order get them to be interested and carry on reading the whole of your CV.
Usually consisting of around 4-5 lines, a personal profile should be written in the third person and should be used to promote your skills, experiences and achievements. This should allow the reader to gain an overview of your CV and who you are, without having to read the whole of your CV.
Think of your personal profile as your personal sales pitch, where the product you are selling is you
!
- Consider writing your personal profile last - after writing your CV. This will allow you to know what are to cover and will allow you to easily summarise your CV
- Avoid using
I
and repeating yourself too often - Try to avoid cliches such as
able to work in a team
, etc - Compare your profile with the job spec or your
desired job role
and match your skills and experience to those job spec - have you shown evidence of their requirements? Remember to use relevantkeywords
in your profile and your CV. - Tailor your personal profile to match every job application you make.
Using a profile will make it easier to tailor your CV to every job application.
